Nalle Puh (Winnie the Pooh) by Simo Lumme

Click here for a bigger imageHook: 12-6, DE, wide gape, Partridge Capt. Hamilton L2A/L3A or similar
Thread: Orange
Wings: Coarse, curly medium-brown bear hair butts, divided and angled 45° forward
Rib: Fine gold wire
Body: Orange and yellow seal (or substitute) and light brown hare mixed
Hackle: Red game cock
Collar: Red game cock, 1-3 feathers

This is the dry fly to use in Finland. It imitates an egg-laying, fluttering adult caddis and is an excellent fly for any broken water situation. It's also useful as a general searching fly in larger sizes, some people use it for seatrout. Also Dark Puh (all black) and Honey Puh (light brown wings, light green body and light ginger hackles) are good ones.

Wonderwing Caddis by Jari Laakkonen

Hook: 12-10, 2X long
Rib: Brown silk
Body: Yellow polypropylene
Wing: 2 cream cock hackle feathers in wonderwing-style
Legs: Olive deer hair
Thorax: Yellow polypropylene
Hackle: Cree cock, parachute-style around deer hair butts lifted vertical

Excellent low-floating pattern for any difficult situations. Several size and color variations.

Green Caddis Pupa

Hook: 14-10, curved, Partridge GRS12ST or similar
Thread: Green
Weight: Lead wire, 5-20 turns
Tag: Round gold, 2 turns
Rib: Round gold (for abdomen only)
Abdomen: Light green Antron-dubbing, picked well out at sides
Thorax: Dark hare's fur, dubbed rough
Antennas: 2 golden pheasant tail fibers

Simple but effective general pattern. Often even better when fished with a similar fly on the dropper.

Yellow Grouse Sculpin

Hook: 6-2, DE, long shank streamer
Thread: Yellow
Weight: Lead wire (optional)
Rib: Oval gold & 0,20 mm nylon
Body: Yellow angora goat (or substitute) ribbed with gold; rusty orange and brown are also good colors
Throat: Fluorescent red wool
Wing: 2 well-marked grouse feathers, tied down in matuka-style with nylon only
Pectorals: 2 smaller grouse feathers, curving out and down
Head: Deer hair, spun and clipped wide and quite flat, some tips left as a collar

Miller's thumb or sculpin is a very common but secretive fish and big trout love it. Can also be fished unweighted with a floating line close to surface, a very good way to locate fish.

Kalkkisten Vaalea
(The Light One from Kalkkinen)

Vaalea Kalkkinen modif.

Hook: 8-2/0 Single/Double Salmon
Thread: Yellow
Tag: Oval gold
Tail: Tips of two dark ginger cock hackle feathers
Rib: Flat or oval gold
Hackle: Dark ginger cock
Body: 2/3 yellow silk, 1/3 green silk or wool
Collar: Dark ginger cock
Wing: Oak turkey slips
Head: Black lacquer

Very old pattern, smaller sizes popular for trout, also in hairwing style.

Uppo-Bomber (Sunk Bomber) by Ilkka Harma & Kari Pylvänäinen

Hook: 12-2 Single/Double Salmon
Thread: Black or red
Tip: Oval silver
Tag: Fluorescent red silk
Tail: 2-4 stripped black hackle stems placed symmetrically on both sides, curving up and down.

Black or dark brown nutria guard hair in the middle, fairly long

Hackles: Black cock, three turns of long-fibered feather at the base of the tail.

Black, short-fibered half-stripped feather for the body, reversed

Rib: Wide oval silver, three turns
Body: Black wool, cigar-shaped
Head: Black or red silk

This unusual salmon fly is based on the Icelandic pattern called Francis and it is one of the most successful modern dressings. Liberal use of Super-Glue is recommended to strengthen the fly (tag, hackles and head) as heavy wear can be expected. Best fished slowly close to the bottom.
